Café Yolk is a little, independent bistro in Reading, specialising, as its name may suggest in breakfast and brunch. Opening in late 2012, the stylish café-come-restaurant was an instant hit amongst the many students of Reading, and locals, as a refreshing and unique indie breakfast choice.

The family run eatery is small, but light and pleasant with about 12 tables inside and outside seating available in the summer months, as well as free wifi. The menu, which is displayed over an expansive blackboard over the back wall of the café has much to offer in the way of English and American style breakfasts, and even brought a few culinary firsts to the area, such as the pancakes and streaky bacon and the Leige waffle.

The biggest breakfast on the menu, and not for the faint hearted I have been assured, in the Canadian – a mammoth relative of the full English with double portions of everything and pancakes with maple syrup. The poached eggs are favourite amongst locals, served on English muffin and with a side of fried potatoes. As well as the usual tea and coffee, speciality coffees are available, as well as some intensely delicious, if seriously calorific, milkshakes. If you’re in a rush there is also a handy to-go breakfast menu, featuring a full English warp and the stalwart of all busy breakfast devotes; the bacon bap.

Situated right in the heart of the student accommodation heavy are of Reading, CafĂ© Yolk is often full on a Tuesday and Saturday morning with last night’s partiers attempting to combat the hangover with a carb-heavy brunch. At other times the cafĂ© is usually not too busy. I have never had to queue to eat, although I would say that even if you do hit peak times it’s worth the wait.

The strong sense of community spirit, which has been a part of the cafĂ©’s ethos from the very beginning, means that the bistro enjoys a loyal customer base. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, and they keep in constant contact with their devotees via Facebook. The fresh and relatively original take on their breakfast service means that you can dine in Reading before 12 pm in style, where the area was previously wanting.

Find Cafe Yolk at 44 Erleigh Road (a very fitting address for breakfast).
Opening hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 am til 4:00 pm. Sunday 9:00 am til 4:00 pm.
